Amazon Promise is a U.S. non-profit organization, exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Under state law, which will vary from state to state, and federal law, which may change annually, a large portion, if not all of your trip is tax deductible in the United States. Likewise, monetary donations made in the U.S. are tax deductible.

The traditional two-week expedition takes place in the Peruvian Amazon jungle in villages that have no other access to health care. You function as part of the health care team rotating through various disciplines: patient intake, triage, history and physical examination, wound care, traditional medicine, ethnobotany, pharmacy, and patient teaching. For the four-week elective, you arrive one week prior to the traditional two-week expedition and work with both the Peruvian physician and US volunteer staff in Iquitos Peru. During that week you will see patients with our Peruvian physician at the project office, do hut or house calls in the poorest sections of town, visit a local government laboratory to learn about tropical diseases, learn about medicinal plants and visit local shaman, review past expedition reports, and assist in preparing for the clinical jungle rotation. The second and third week you will rotate through the jungle clinics in various Amazon villages, and assist with emergency “hut” calls. The fourth week you return to Iquitos and again work with the US volunteer staff and our Peruvian physician seeing patients, cleaning up trip supplies, compiling patient records from the jungle clinics, and rearranging medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.

All of your housing, tips, food, transportation as well as guides, translators, and medical evacuation insurance are covered in the two-week cost. For the four-week cost we cover your additional two-week housing, medical evacuation insurance and transportation around the city (during working hours). You will also be given a food stipend as needed. Amazon Promise is an all-volunteer organization and we all pay our own costs. We have never had anyone who could not go because the funds could not be raised, however, we have had those who did not want to raise funds and as such did not participate. Team members are encouraged to seek sponsorship to help defray individual costs. Raising money is hard work but we will assist you! On request we will provide you with a personalized fundraising letter for you to circulate among family, friends, school and community groups. All contributions made to Amazon Promise on your behalf will be deducted from your expedition fee. In turn, we will provide a receipt for tax-exemption to all individuals or organizations making donations of $50 or more.
